Representative of the Victorian age in Lincolnshire History

Lincolnshire was formed by the merging of the territory of the ancient Kingdom of Lindsey with that controlled by the Danelaw ( from the Old English Dena lagu ) which was an area of under the administrative control of the Vikings, (Danes or Norsemen). The territory of Lindsey is recorded in the Domesday Book. Lindsey, later only applied as the northern part around Lincoln, emerged as one of the three portions of ‘Lincolnshire',  with the other areas of Holland and Kesteven.

When county councils were set up in 1888, Lindsey, Holland and Kesteven and most of Lindsey were formed into the County of Lincolnshire .

In 1996 a local government reform abolished Humberside, and parts south of the Humber became the North Lincolnshire and North East Lincolnshire authorities.These areas became part of Lincolnshire for ceremonial purposes , but are not covered by the Lincolnshire police. These two authorities are in the Yorkshire and the Humber region.      

The remaining districts of Lincolnshire are Boston, East all part of the East Midlands region.Lindsey, Lincoln, South Holland, South Kesteven , North

Kesteven and West Lindsey.They are

Famous scientist, Mathematician and Physicist,

Dr George Bass, (1771-1803)

British naval surgeon and explorer of ,

Was born at Aswarby, a hamlet near Sleaford

Lincolnshire and was educated at Boston

Grammar School. He arrived in Sydney in

New South Wales on the ship ‘Reliance’.

Sir John Franklin, (1786-1847)

Born in Spilsby, Lincolnshire . An English explorer,

led several expeditions to the Arctic region.

Although he took part in the great sea battle of

Trafalgar, he is best remembered for his surveys

Of the Arctic . He lost his life during an expedition

To find the Northwest Passage , a northern water

Route across North America .

Peregrine Bertie,(1714-1778)

General Peregrine Bertie, 3rd Duke of Ancaster and Kesteven.

(Lord Willoughby de Eresby) He gained the

Rank of General on 25 May 1772. Soldier &

Governor of Berwick – The family still live

At Grimsthorpe Castle .

 

George Boole, father of modern algebra - born in Lincoln

Captain John Smith, Governor of Virginia - born in Willoughby

Henry Winn, prolific writer

 And recorder of village history - born in Fulletby
